The Newisys EDA-4605 is a dense 240TB array, featuring a 4U configuration with 60 Ethernet-direct drives. In addition, it has four 10Gb Ethernet ports, as well as redundant hot-swappable Ethernet management modules and power/fan units.

“Newisys has a strong track record as an industry leader, providing innovative storage solutions to a broad range of markets. We are proud to have Newisys be one of the first storage server companies to announce products incorporating Seagate’s Kinetic Open Storage Ethernet drives into their systems,” stated Ali Fenn, Seagate senior director of advanced storage technology. “Newisys’ extensive experience deploying multi-petabyte installations that incorporate Seagate hard drive and solid state drive technology, coupled with our newly announced Kinetic platform will deliver industry-leading reliability, simplicity and efficiency.”

Newisys provides datacenter appliance, including disk-based and solid-state solutions. Designed for datacenter operators, original equipment manufacturers and systems integrators, Newisys products reduce development time and operational costs while also enabling better agility. The addition of Seagate Kinetic Open Storage puts Newsisys appliances at the cutting-edge of enterprise cloud storage, giving them the performance and ease-of-use to meet a wide range of IT requirements

Seagate Kinetic Open Storage enables more efficient cloud building
Moreover, the usage of Seagate Kinetic Open Storage in solutions such as the Newsisys EDA-4605 enables applications to communicate directly with storage devices, obviating the need for a separate storage server tier. Data Center Knowledge’s Bill Kleyman explained that solutions like Seagate Kinetic Open Storage are the future of enterprise cloud computing, since they make applications more intelligent by way of providing access to APIs across the entire stack.

At the same time, Seagate Kinetic Open Storage saves enterprises money on cloud hardware procurement. It allows for denser, more efficient storage arrays, enabling companies to make better use of existing resources without having to add a large number of new appliances. To this end, it breaks down the barriers between cloud applications physical storage, providing superior scalability.

“[D]evelopers realized that they needed to reduce the amount of communication happening between the logical and the physical layer. When that challenge was overcome, you suddenly created a cloud environment capable of great scale,” explained Kleyman. “By better understanding hardware and software capabilities, the Kinetic Open Storage platform enables cloud service providers and independent software vendors to optimize scale-out file and object-based storage.”

Seagate has also made Kinetic Open Storage more amenable to enterprises by integrating open source technologies. Open APIs make it possible to use these storage solutions with a diverse collection of storage devices, on any platform. The benefits of these APIs extend to servers with internal storage, which can be optimized using Seagate’s platform.

The rise of big data initiatives, cloud computing services and new endpoints such as mobile devices and open standards hardware have moved data centers away from being hardware-centric, instead placing more importance on the software that ties IT assets together. Accordingly, Newsisys EDA-4605 and Seagate Kinetic Open Storage more broadly are well-positioned to serve enterprise needs because they facilitate high-quality application delivery and user experience.

More specifically, Kinetic Open Storage improves I/O efficiency with better data replication, archive performance and cluster management. It enables applications to address specific features in any type of cloud infrastructure, paving the way for optimized solutions that fit specific datacenter and storage requirements.
